The BLM has hit a limit on how many Mustangs they can legally round up for now. Their funding is no longer sufficient for now. Will they let the horses be?

This week wild horse advocate Laura Leigh has reported on a new bill in the Nevada Senate that would eliminate the wild horses’ and burros’ rights to WATER. Can you imagine? What a way to eradicate wild horses and burros – to deny them of water would be a cruel, slow death. They would accomplish this by removing "horses and burros" from the definition of wildlife. By removing Mustangs from the list of wildlife, the government would be labeling Mustangs as domestic animals, thus forcing their "owners" to take care of them. Pardon, but Mustangs have had no owners for over 500 years. I call government hypocrisy on this.

The current Nevada definition of wildlife states  "'Wildlife' means any wild mammal, wild bird, fish, reptile, amphibian, mollusk or crustacean found naturally in a wild state, whether indigenous to Nevada or not and whether raised in captivity or not." Are Mustangs native? No, but the definition does not call for the animal in question to be indigenous to Nevada. No other species is singled out for exclusion, why should Mustangs be?

You can read more about the situation on Wild Horse Education’s website. Please voice your opinion at the “opinion poll” on the Nevada Legislature site (I recommend this for Nevada residents) and at our change.org petition from 2012 that we reopened upon hearing of SB235. Some of you may have already signed but we are asking all our supporters to make sure they’ve signed and shared this important, urgent, petition.
